Flying to Catalina: A Southern California Adventure

If you're looking for a fun cross-country destination from Camarillo, it's hard to beat Catalina Island.

The flight itself is half the fun. Once you leave the beautiful California coast behind, getting an incredible view of LAX on the way, you'll have the Pacific Ocean below you and Catalina ahead. On a clear day, the island's mountains and coastline make for an incredible view from the cockpit.

And while flying over Catalina is beautiful, landing there makes the trip even better.

Airport in the Sky

Catalina's Airport in the Sky, (KAVX), is located in the middle of the island, surrounded by rolling hills and open terrain. It's a very different setting from the airports we're used to flying around Southern California, which is part of what makes the trip so memorable.

The airport also has a pretty interesting history. The airfield on Catalina Island was developed by the Wrigley family, and later used by the military during WWII. Today, KAVX is a popular destination for pilots and aviation enthusiasts.

And, of course, there's lunch.

The famous $100 hamburger has become something of a tradition in general aviation, and Catalina is a great place to check it off the list - buffalo-style!

More Than Just a Cross-Country

For students, a Catalina flight is a great opportunity to put the skills you've been practicing into a real destination flight.

You'll get to plan a longer trip, cross open water, navigate to an unfamiliar airport, and experience a completely different flying environment—all while getting some pretty great views along the way.

Just be sure to check the weather, winds, airport information, and NOTAMs before heading out. Conditions can be different on the island than they are on the mainland, so a little extra planning goes a long way.

Ready to Go?

Whether you're a student working toward your private pilot certificate or simply looking for a fun place to explore, Catalina is a trip worth making.

Fly over the ocean. Land on the island. Grab some lunch.

For a memorable cross-country with a little something extra, Catalina is hard to beat.
